Current Openings
With the evolution of sophisticated protein therapeutics, new challenges are emerging to make these molecules faster and in a functional form.
Scientist/Sr. Scientist, Biochemical Assay Development and HTS
Requisition #1237

Sutro Biopharma, located in South San Francisco, is revolutionizing biologics research and development using biochemical protein synthesis to design proteins that have been inaccessible, and even unimaginable, until now. Sutro's synthesis technology opens up opportunities to create protein therapeutics that cannot be produced using conventional methods. The company is using this technology to introduce novel chemical modifications, including non-natural amino acids, into proteins to make "biobetters" with improved pharmaceutical properties, as well as novel therapeutics. Sutro Biopharma's technology enables the rapid and systematic exploration of many protein drug variants to identify drug candidates. Once identified, production of these protein drug candidates can be scaled up to commercial levels. In addition to developing its own drug pipeline, Sutro Biopharma is collaborating with select pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the development of novel protein therapeutics that cannot be designed, produced or studied with current technologies.

Responsibilities:
This position will be part of the Assay Development and High Throughput Screening group responsible for designing and developing biochemical and cell based functional readouts to improve the amounts of correctly folded protein produced in our cell free synthesis reactions. Responsibilities will also include designing and developing various assays, adaptable to high throughput format, that enable us to evaluate the quality, activity and function of various target bio-therapeutics. The right candidate will also be able to provide technical and strategic leadership in ongoing programs and mentorship to Scientists and/or Research Associates.

Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Enzymology or biological sciences with 3-5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology organizations or BS/MS with 8-10+ years experience
  • Specific experience in development of  biochemical assays for automated platforms for medium- to high-throughput screening
  • Excellent quantitative data analysis skills in a HT environment
  • The individual must have strong capability to troubleshoot technical problems and to develop assays to support screening and functional characterization of modified proteins.
  • Collaborative individual with an aptitude for creative thinking and rapid learning of new skill sets
  • Outstanding written/verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Specific experience with enzymology of components of transcription and translation machinery
  • Familiarity with programming BiomekFX based workstations particularly for automating DNA preparation and HT protein purification
  • Experience with multiple assay and detection formats (e.g. ELISA, Biacore, FACS, fluorescence polarization, FRET, AlphaScreen®, and/or HTRF®)
  • Experience in the use of discovery database programs such as ActivityBase and Genedata Screener
  • Experience with in vitro evolution and protein engineering workflows
Sutro provides a competitive benefits package that includes a choice of health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, 401K plan, PTO, and stock options.
