Associate Scientist, Fermentation (South San Francisco, CA)
Sutro Biopharma, Inc. is looking for energetic and talented individuals to join its multidisciplinary research and development team. You will be working to develop new processes to maximize our technology and enhance our internal and collaborative product development initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
You will participate in cross-functional teams and collaborate on multiple projects. Responsibilities extend from running established fermentation and cell free extract production processes to developing new processes to increase productivity. Experiments are conducted over a large range of scales using a variety of techniques. Current fermentation equipment includes small-scale multi-unit systems, larger SIP laboratory systems, and medium size pilot and manufacturing scale fermentors. Cell free extract preparation equipment includes small and medium scale homogenizers along with a range of batch and continuous centrifuges. The successful candidate will design and execute fermentation as well as primary recovery processes, develop new processes appropriate to the scale and manufacturing phase for given projects and implement appropriate assays to characterize extracts to better understand the technology and processes. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to make presentations to internal teams and senior management and to author internal and external publications. Weekend and off shift work (when necessary) for development and production work is required.
We are seeking a highly-motivated team-player with excellent problem-solving skills and experience in fermentations and cell lysate preparation and clarification. Versatility is a must, as tasks will involve a range of reactors and scales and process modes. Good organizational skills and the ability to manage tasks within a timeline are essential.
The ideal candidate will have the following background/skill set:
- Bachelors or Masters in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, with 5+ years’ industry experience. PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, with 0-2 years’ industry experience.
- Experience with the following is required:
- Laboratory and pilot scale process equipment,
- Designing and executing E. coli fermentations including fed-batch and/or continuous fermentations, and preparing cell lysates and clarification
- Experience with the following is preferred:
- Process validation and technology transfer
- cGMP Bioprocessing
- MFCS/Delta/Visual basic programming
- Design of experiments
- Working on cross-functional teams
- Mechanical aptitude
